Neodymium Magnets

Neodymium magnets feature a smooth and shiny outer coating, which can occasionally pose challenges for adhesive bonding. This smooth surface may hinder some glues from adhering effectively, making it essential to ensure a secure and durable bond.

Before gluing Neodymium magnets together or attaching them to other materials, thoroughly clean all surfaces. Alcohol-based solvents or cleaning products work best for this purpose.

For small, thin magnets that don’t bear significant weight or pull forces, gluing to another magnet or a smooth surface typically requires no additional preparation. Double-sided tape can also serve as a simple option for lightweight applications.

Larger magnets, especially those with load-bearing capacities exceeding 3kg, may benefit from surface preparation. Mildly abrading the smooth nickel coating can enhance the bond between the glue and the magnet. Light sanding with fine-grade abrasive paper or gently etching the surface with a thin nail or scraper can improve adhesion. Ensure to wipe away any dust or loose material after etching; targeting around 10% of the total surface area is usually sufficient to create a secure bond.

While most common adhesives work with Neodymium magnets, hot glue guns are not recommended, as the heat generated can permanently damage the Neodymium material at temperatures exceeding 80°C.

Ceramic Magnets

Gluing ceramic magnets is straightforward, involving the thorough cleaning of Ceramic dust from the magnet’s surface before bonding it to another material. It’s advisable to choose an adhesive that is compatible with the surface you are attaching the magnet to.

Steel or metal alloys
Timber composites

Ceramic magnets can withstand temperatures up to 250°C without losing their magnetism, allowing for the use of hot glue guns operating below this threshold when appropriate.

Alnico and Samarium Magnets

Alnico and Samarium magnets are resistant to high temperatures, enabling the use of hot glue guns for adhesion in many cases.

The surface of these magnets is not as smooth as nickel but is slightly coarser, making them compatible with many common adhesives. As with other magnets, choose an adhesive that is suitable for the non-magnetic surface, whether it is PVC, plastic, metal, or timber.
