Alnico is an alloy that contains varying amounts of Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt hence the name Alnico. Typically, Alnico formulas have very high temperature capabilities, up to 540˚C although they are not as powerful as other types of magnets and is less stable so they will lose their magnetism with time.
Alnico has a classic metallic appearance, and can be made with quite complicated pole structures depending on the purpose of the magnet. Traditional Horseshoe and Bar magnets are usually made from Alnico as it is the weakest form of permanent magnet that is strong and wont break or shatter.
Holding magnets are effectively a strong single sided magnet. By having a steel surround placed around the magnet, the magnetic field is deflected causing the magnetism to be stronger on one side of the magnet than the other.
The steel surround also provides protection for the raw magnets inside allowing it to be protected from impacts, avoiding chipping or cracking.
At Magnets New Zealand, we pride ourselves in our high quality magnets and superior customer service.
